Proof that a solid foundation is still the secret to success

Surviving this economic climate is an achievement for any business in the construction industry. Surviving 10 years under the same management and achieving a turnover of more than R½ billion, however is testament to the fact that Cape Island Construction is truly built to last.

“Our core philosophy of ‘built to last’ is the cornerstone of everything we do,” says CEO John Rimbault. “We make it a part of every building we create, the way we mentor our staff through continuous education   and how we invest back into the communities within which we operate. It’s a matter of taking pride and passion in every aspect of the business and I believe that has been our secret to going from strength to strength over the past decade”.

Founded in 2000 as Cape Island Homes, the company initially focused exclusively on luxury housing on Knysna’s Thesen Island development. Since then, by diligently working to expand their capacity and expertise, Cape Island Construction now delivers on both residential and commercial projects of all shapes and sizes across the country… with a track record of excellence to boot.

Upmarket residential: Home is where the heart is

True to their roots, Cape Island Construction has mastered the craft of Conventional Construction. This encompasses all traditional forms of structural load-bearing elements – or as most of us knows it, all buildings typically constructed from concrete, brick and structural steel. The majority of Cape Island Construction’s upmarket residential projects incorporate conventional construction.

“There’s really nothing conventional about it!” says Rimbault. “Each project presents unique challenges and outcomes. Because we work with a diverse and dynamic group of consultants and designers combined with the ever evolving trends and specifications of the current market, professional management and exceptional quality control is of utmost importance… we take great pride in both.”

Timber: Building for tomorrow

Staying ahead of the competition requires innovation and forward thinking. Cape Island Construction has gone beyond the predictable and is now equally well known for their residential and commercial timber constructions, which can be seen around Thesen Island and across the Southern Cape.

Internationally, timber is rapidly becoming the preferred method of construction. It’s considered more sustainable than conventional buildings and produces a substantially lower carbon footprint … both during construction and the lifecycle of the building.

“Our timber projects are not only friendlier to the environment, but they also provide a unique aesthetic appeal. More than that, they provide a very cost-effective and practical alternative due to improved insulation, faster construction speed and optimised floor area.”

Commercial: Better buildings make for better business

Cape Island Construction has extensive experience in commercial projects. Over the years they have completed numerous shopping centres, hotels, multi-storey office blocks and residential complexes. Recent projects include the Turbine Hotel, Perfect Positions Offices, Rex Hotel as well as the sought after Drymill Apartments.
Geoff Engel of the Turbine Hotel and Spa had the following to say about Cape Island Construction’s approach to commercial projects: “They handled the extremely intricate and difficult project of converting the old Knysna power station into a five-star boutique hotel with aplomb, skill and enthusiasm. They completed the task on time and within budget. In my experience that’s a very rare achievement these days!”

Rimbault believes that testimonials like this affirm that their ‘built to last’ philosophy has allowed them to thrive over the last decade.

“We proactively manage the entire spectrum of activities with every project we take on – from inception and detail design development, on-site construction to careful financial management – and that’s why we can confidently promise to deliver in time and on budget, every time… and that’s also why we are proud to put our name to each and every project we take on – because we know that pride and passion ensures that it’s built to last in every sense of the phrase.”

The story continues…

According to Rimbault, prospective clients can expect more of the same from Cape Island Construction going forward. “We understand that a new home is more than just a place to live. It’s a reflection of you and your family. That’s why we look forward to the next decade of helping our customers transform their dreams into reality.”

With current projects in the Southern Cape, Gauteng and North-West Province, Cape Island Construction looks set to continue their phenomenal growth across South Africa.
